How to Apply for WIC (Women, Infants, and Children)
WIC provides nutritious food, breastfeeding support, and health referrals for pregnant women, new mothers, and children under 5. Income limits are higher than most expect (about $2,248/month for a family of two in 2025), and you do not need to be a citizen — WIC does not ask about immigration status.

Check the eligibility rules
You qualify if you are pregnant, postpartum (up to 6 months), breastfeeding (up to 1 year), an infant, or a child under 5, AND your household income is under the limit (roughly 185% of poverty — about $2,248/month for 2 people, $3,445 for 4, in 2025). Contact your local WIC office
WIC is run by states — find your agency through the USDA WIC directory or by calling the state health department. Many offices take online pre-applications or same-week appointments. Say who the applicants are (e.g. "pregnant mom and 2-year-old").

Attend the certification appointment
A staff member checks income and residency documents, takes height/weight and a blood iron test (a finger prick for kids), and asks about diet and health. The health screening is required — it is how WIC tailors your food package and referrals.

Get your eWIC card and shopping list
Approved applicants receive an eWIC card (works like a debit card for WIC foods) and a printed or app-based list of exactly what is covered: specific amounts of milk, eggs, cereal, peanut butter, fruits/vegetables, whole-grain bread, and formula. Benefits load monthly.

Keep appointments and recertify
WIC certification lasts about 6 months (3 for infants), then you recertify with updated income documents. Missed appointments can pause benefits — reschedule by phone if you cannot attend. Nutrition classes and breastfeeding support are free perks of enrollment.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
I am not a US citizen. Can I get WIC?
Yes. WIC does not require citizenship or a Social Security number, and using WIC does not count against you in future immigration applications — it is not considered a "public charge" benefit. WIC staff do not ask about immigration status.
What does WIC actually pay for?
A specific monthly food package: milk, cheese, eggs, cereal, whole grains, peanut butter or beans, fruits and vegetables (cash value voucher), juice, and infant formula or baby food. It is not a cash benefit and does not cover diapers, wipes, or formula beyond the prescribed amount.
Can I get WIC and SNAP at the same time?
Yes — they are separate programs with separate applications, and being on SNAP automatically qualifies you income-wise for WIC. Many families use both: SNAP for general groceries, WIC for the specific nutritious foods on the WIC list.
