Confirm you actually owe estimates
You must pay estimates if you expect to owe $1,000+ at tax time AND your withholding covers less than 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's tax (110% if your income was over $150,000). Salaried with a small side gig? Increasing your W-4 withholding instead can be simpler.

A simpler shortcut: pay 100% of last year's total tax in four equal chunks (the "safe harbor") and you cannot be penalized no matter what you earn this year.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I miss a quarterly deadline?
The IRSInternal Revenue Service — The US federal tax agency. It collects federal income taxes, issues refunds, and administers ITINs.Click for official info ↗ charges an underpayment penalty (currently around 7–8% annualized, on the shortfall for the days it was late). It is calculated automatically — you do not need to file a separate form. One late quarter on a small amount is usually just a few dollars.
I just started freelancing and have no idea what I'll earn. What do I do?
Use last year's safe harbor if you had a job, or estimate from your first months of income and set aside 25–30% of every payment in a separate savings account as a buffer.
Do I have to pay estimates on investment income?
Not usually — you can cover investment income by increasing W-4 withholding or making one big Q4 estimate. Withholding is treated as paid evenly through the year, which estimates are not, so it is more forgiving.
